Brought up in a meat and two veg household, I went vegetarian in my early twenties. My Dad said it was a phase I'd grow out of, but it's been nearly 30 years now.
In early 2003, I met my current partner. In the early days of our relationship, we spent a lot of time eating out. (In fact, we still do). During one of my moans about yet another place that claimed to cater for vegetarians and then finding, on arrival, that said establishment hadn't a clue, he suggested I set up a website identifying places that do cater for vegetarians. So Veggie Places was born. It's now the number one vegetarian restaurant site in the world.
It's not perfect, I know that. Whilst people expect books to be out of date as soon as they are published, they are less forgiving of websites. Information gets out of date online too. Managements change, chefs change, menus change, opening hours - it's like painting that bridge in Scotland. We do the best we can with the resources we have. Without the legion of supporters who do help - writing reviews, adding places, advising us of changes that are needed, taking photos - all for no reward other than our heartfelt thanks and the knowledge that they are helping other veggies - the site would be all the poorer.
We have lots of exciting plans for VP in the next few months, so watch this space...
I'd love to hear from you if you have something to say: just drop me a mail at debbie@veggieplaces.com
Now and again I get mails from people annoyed/slighted/surprised that a veggie restaurant doesn’t cater sufficiently for vegans, if at all.
My personal opinion is that veggie restaurants that don’t cater for vegans are missing a trick. Vegans are really easy to cater for: when I ran a café with my sister, we made sure that most of our veggie dishes were suitable for vegans. As a vegetarian, I love vegan food and probably cook a vegan meal for my family two to three times a week. I don’t like cheese or eggs with everything. When I eat out, I worry about the provenance of the cheese and the eggs anyway, so I’ll always choose the vegan option if there is one.
However, vegetarian restaurants are at liberty to run their places as they please. If you are vegan, it makes sense to check with the place beforehand. You might then avoid the veggie lasagne or jacket potato with cheese that the rest of us have to put up with.
If you do find a place with great vegan options, please don’t keep it to yourself - put the place on the site if it’s not there already and post a review. Then we can all benefit.
