I still bewail the closure of Country Life in London several years ago, so the chance to go to a similar establishment in Prague was not to be missed.

Centrally located, Country Life follows the usual format: opens at noon, self service, pay for food by weight. It’s closed on Saturday.

We found a large selection of freshly made food: salads, hot meal options and soup. I didn’t know what I was helping myself to as the signs were in Czech, but it was all wholesome, tasty stuff so I didn’t really care. My plate, which included a delicious blackcurrant pastry tart and a bottled juice, was around £6.

Tables are arranged over a flagstone floor with unusual pine high back chairs. Chilled water is free - isn’t that a lovely touch?

Next door, they have a shop, useful if you are self catering.
