It's time to add another review of this establishment, because it's sixteen months since I last wrote about it and I've been back at least five times (including twice this week, with different guests).
The Greenhouse Kitchen never disappoints. There is a good choice of excellent food, much of it vegan (the vegan food is identified as such on the blackboard, and always includes a delicious soup); the premises are unusually light and spacious (particularly upstairs); and the people are friendly.
It's often possible to find a parking space in the street outside (you're allowed up to an hour), but if not there's a large Waitrose multi-storey car park just across the road (£1 for an hour, £2 for two hours - but it's free if you buy some stuff in the superrmarket).

What a lovely place! We arrived just before 11am on Saturday morning and were warmly welcomed by the owners. I was expecting to have to choose from the breakfast menu but there was only one lunchtime dish that wasn't ready. All the vegan options were clearly labelled, as were gluten free options, and unlike some places, I immediately felt confident that if I ordered something vegan, it would be vegan! It was very hard to decide!
I really enjoyed my home made veggie burger which came with a mixture of salads. The spicy potato soup was thick and creamy (yet vegan), and everything else looked great too. It's even licensed so you can enjoy a glass of wine with your lunch.
There's a great choice of cakes and ice creams too - I took a vegan treacle tart with me to eat later and it was delicious.
If I lived nearer I would be setting up a second home here.

Me and my sister visited this gem of a cafe during our 'big adventure' trip to Portsmouth. Very warm welcome received, scrummy food, fast service and sensble prices. Highly recommended for lunch (it is a cafe and not a restaurant) with lots of vegan options including cake and ice cream! I had a veggie pasty and baked beans (big kid) and sis had a curry flavoured veggie burger with a very imaginative salad. They do a variety of sandwiches, curry of the day, salads, cakes and you can take away the cakes if you're too full, like we were! They also have some outside seating for these hot barmy days!!

A fantastic cafe. I live in Southampton and often drive to Portsmouth just for the beautiful homemade cakes. Really lovely atmosphere and friendly owners. Would definitely recommend it.

If Michelin stars were awarded for friendliness, this place would have three. A bright and welcoming place with a casual ambience. Plenty for vegans including cakes. My burger in soft bread roll was lacking in texture and flavour but the mixed salad served with it was fresh and varied. I would have liked a larger plate as the food was crammed onto it, but I'm being a bit picky as usual. An interesting area with a slightly arty feel; park in Waitrose opposite and spend a while browsing the independent shops that seem to abound here.

Following my "preview" of October 2008 (see below), in the end it took us six months to make it to the Greenhouse Kitchen; but it fully lived up to expectations.
The premises (there are tables in both a downstairs and an upstairs section) are light and spacious; the people who run the place are friendly; and the food is excellent.
Also (always a huge plus, and every vegetarian eating-place should do this), all food suitable for vegans is marked "Ve" on the blackboard.
We didn't have much trouble finding a parking place in Marmion Street (it's free for up to one hour), but this situation may vary.
We used to travel from Basingstoke to eat here when it was the Country Kitchen, and didn't realise it had re-opened last year. Our impressions today were very positive- it's now run by a genuinely, friendly helpful couple, it's child-friendly and there were 3 or 4 vegan main course options, in addition to vegan soup, sandwiches, etc. The cafe itself has always been great but there were a few nice touches from the new owners- a baby changing unit in the toilets, for example, table service, drinks served in child-friendly cups with a straw. Unfortunately, our 2-year-old was playing up so we didn't get chance to try any of the vegan desserts or ice creams, but I'm sure we'll be back again- highly recommended.

The Greenhouse kitchen offers a menu which changes each day - with four hot lunches, soup and savoury tarts. On most days the meals are all Vegan and Gluten Free.
Full Vegetarian Society accredited menu including wines and beers.
Special options including soya milk cappacino, latte, vegan smoothies and milk shakes.

Good news for Portsmouth vegetarians, who have had nowhere to eat out since The Country Kitchen closed.
Strangely, The Greenhouse Kitchen occupies the same premises as The Country Kitchen, although the people who run the new place had no connection with the old (other, I gather, than that they sometimes ate there!).
I haven't yet been to The Greenhouse Kitchen, but hope to go soon. The signs look promising (see the website), and when I rang to ask about vegan options they said they had four that day.
