Around lunchtime one Sunday, on a gorgeously sunny day in mid-April, we turned a corner and happened upon this pub.
Normally, they offer nut roast, but they had none that day they told us. Expecting the alternatives to be dire, I was surprised to see home made cheese and onion pie and sweet and sour vegetables with rice.
So we settled ourselves outside in the sun on a little terrace and waited for our meals to arrive. She of little faith was still not convinced, but when the food came, we were both pleased. My sweet and sour was like those chicken balls from the Chinese takeaway that my son used to like; deep fried but with vegetables instead of chicken - mushroom, pepper, broccoli and onion. They were light and well cooked and the accompanying sauce definitely tasted home made. Mr Big pronounced his pie excellent - it was a hefty chunk served with fat chips and lashings of gravy. The meals were only £4.95 each. Simple, well cooked food. Why is that so rare, especially for vegetarian options? Service was friendly too.
I don’t suggest you drive, take a Sea Cat and then a train to eat here, but if you are in the area, I think you’d be foolish not to give it a go.
