Pound for pound the best veggie restaurant in the uk. It is scruffy and the service a little too far into the hippy side of things, but all is redeemed by the food. Real innovative cooking, genuine Michelin style and balance. Cafe Maitreya has the best veggie food in the UK, period.

Wow! just superb, lovely place, buzzy area, friendly efficient helpful staff, made to feel welcome when you go in,no awkward hanging around wondering what to do, beautifully presented and tasty food, good vegan selectiod, fair prices, good ethics so glad I have booked to go at Christmas. only tiny tiny downside..could do with bit of screening at Loo window...felt so conspicious to the outside world... Loved this place well worth its excellent reputation.

Yum Yum Yum! Great food, great friendly service. Food like I've never had before - I'd never have thought of combining sweet potato and rhubarb for a main course but it was great. Portions not enormous but definitely value for money - £22.95 for 3 courses (I think) plus drinks.

Now also open for lunch (more cafe style) on Thurs, Fri & Sat - give them a ring to make sure as my memory isn't always what it should be. If there at lunch make sure you go to the Bristol Sweet Mart over the road to buy lots of veggie supplies to take home!

Visited Cafe Maitreya at the weekend as we were in Bristol for the Vegan Fayre.

It's not a particularly nice location and we struggled to find it but were so glad we did!

The menu is short but really interesting. There were 2 vegan choices for each course, even including the desserts.

Everything we ate was really good quality and had been put together by someone with creative ideas but not thrown together for the sake of it.

The wine list is long and very well chosen.

We had 3 courses each, 2 glasses of wine and bottle of wine and the bill came to £72. Included in that was complimentary bread, a small amuse bouche which wasn't vegan, and a small pre-dessert which was. I thought that was very reasonable indeed when you think of what you can sometimes rack up in a chain pub.

We will be back!

Highly over-rated. Food is average, very pretentious and fiddly. If you want small portions that look pretty go here, if you want something tasty and substantial go elsewhere. Vegan choice is often very limited, usually only one dessert and a couple of mains. Has a tendency to use 'trendy' ingredients which are not always the tastiest.

An excellent restaurant with friendly service, beautiful and imaginative food, with thought going into accompanying dishes. The wine list is good and the prices are very reasonable.

Visited last Saturday. Maitreya had just been voted best Restaurant by the Veggie Society for the second year running. Great Strudel, amazing Mezze, our girls loved the red berry smoothie and managed to get hummous on a Buddha's nose(!). Fresh and interesting menu without too much pretention. Good sized portions. Well worth a visit.

This place has been on our must go to list for some time now. Voted the best vegetarian gourmet restaurant recently by the Vegetarian Society, it is not to be missed on any visit to the West Country.

A cafe style eatery situated in a cosmopolitan area of narrow streets, (and opposite a superb Indian supermarket), it was very busy on the Sunday lunch we visited. We had to wait a few minutes for a table but it was well worth it. The food was excellent! I had the rarebit and my partner had the tapas selection. Both were tasty and very filling. We were tempted by the puds but had no room for more.

Bristol seems to have more than its fair share of veggie and vegan places, and the Cafe Maitreya is surely the jewel in the crown.
