Ok, so I know I'm leaving this area and I'm sad. I've been coming to this cafe for years and I love it!

I read the reviews here and some of it I simply dont recognise.

I've been many times on a Thursday for the vegan food and it's absolutely amazing and one of the best nights. The guy who normally cooks (although that can vary a lot - possible affecting the reviews below) but he buys local, organic and grows his own! reviews are not my thing but I felt moved to comment on what I think is totally untrue. Try it yourself folk! The menu always changes and he does this amazing vegan medieval food! Who on earth would think of that!?

Terrible service; but the food is even worse.

Vegan food can be delicious: fresh, flavorful and wholesome. For that you would have to go somewhere else. The Bonnington Cafe pride themselves on serving austere food -- which turns out to be unfit even to feed to animals. We had chickpea-and-nut vegan balls which we choked down after slathering them with oil; and "vegan wellington" -- sawdust fresh from the mill, apparently -- which we simply could not ingest. They found a couple of leaves somewhere and presented them as a salad, and also smashed a boiled potato for us. No dressings; no salt or pepper; no flavour of any kind. This is a disgrace to vegans everywhere.

With so few vegan restaurants out there, the Bonnington should make some effort to make real vegan food, not careless slop.

Slop was presented within two minutes of ordering: then we were abandoned to our fate. We could not obtain the bill and had to leave money on the table. I only wish I had visited the (unisex) toilet before ordering, so I would have known not to eat from the kitchen.

(NOTE: The VP team tried to contact the cafe but the phone directs you to their website that has no contact information.)

We went on Thursday which is vegan day and the place was pretty busy. A nice couple let us share their wobbly table; they said they do a class upstairs and come for lunch nearly every week. We had had lunch nearby, but they let us have a hot drink and a sweet each. The wait person was the sort that makes you feel she is doing you a big favour. Admittedly, she was on her own, but that’s hardly our fault. My tea was served as a teabag in a mug and plonked on the table together with a spoon. A saucer would have been nice; I put my teabag on my napkin. Tap water was served from a large jug on the side. When the water was brought to the table, there were bits floating in the glass. Mr Big asked for a clean glass but Miss Bossy said it was lemon and walked away. It was possibly lemon pip fragments, but he doesn’t like lemon anyway, he asked for plain tap water. He fished the debris out with his finger. Whilst the food might be very good, this sort of place does itself no favours if customer service is so lacking. Maybe we were unlucky, or maybe we are too fussy and the casual hippy ambience is appealing to others, but we do eat out a lot and there are many places in London that deserve to be visited. I’m not convinced this is one of them.

Visited the Bonnington for dinner with some friends on 29th July. Kamila was the chef, and the food was lovely: We had watercress and pear soup to start, followed by a choice of either a vegetable curry with rice and salad or a risotto bake with salad. Dessert was summer fruit pudding. It was all delicious, and my non-veggie friends all commented on how lovely it was. And for £10 for three courses, there were no complaints about the price either!

The cafe is tucked away but well worth the effort to find. Small but cosy it seats about 30 people. The chefs rotate, each day having a different person cooking lunch and dinner. The cafe has recently opened for lunch from 12 -2pm

The chef during my lunch visit was Trish, a very friendly individual who obviously loves cooking and being involved in the cafe. Despite arriving just as they were about to close, I was invited in and made to feel welcome. Much of the menu involved cheese which I try to avoid so I chose the only obvious vegan meal of Piedmont peppers (£3) with a glass of pomegranate juice (£1). It was served with cous cous and a green salad. I probably should be grateful that my choice was made for me as the meal was delicious and the helping generous.

If you are travelling any distance it is definitely worth phoning the chef of the day (see website for phone and email) to check their menu. And be warned, parking is difficult, much of the immediate area is for residents only.

Last night was my second visit to Bonningtons, I wanted to give it a second chance before I posted a review, as my first visit was less than enjoyable. They have different chefs working different nights, and this cetainly showed. The food was 100% better last night than my last visit.

There were 2 starters(£2.50), 3 mains(£6) and 2 desserts(£2.50). We passed on the starters of houmous & crudites, and cauliflower soup, and went for the mains of mediteranian vegetable tart, and a butternut squash & spinach in puff pastry, both served with salad. Portion sizes were small for the price.

The desserts were vegan ice cream with berry sauce, rice cake with chocolate, and vegan brazilian pudding (coconut)also served with berry sauce.

The menu changes daily with the chef. Although the food was very good, presentation is lacking (the vegetable tart looked as if it had been thrown onto the plate from quite a distance away).

Most customers are local, or are regulars, and this is reflected in the very pleasant atmosphere.

Although you will need an A-Z to find it as it is tucked away in the middle of nowhere, it really is well worth a visit.
